The Wonderful Healing Powers of Reiki

Reiki is an ancient technique that’s different from almost all healing modalities. Not only is it a uniquely safe and gentle method, but anyone can benefit from just a few minutes of Reiki-- children, animals, and plants included!

The principle behind Reiki is that there is an animating energy inside us and around us that can’t be seen, but is felt. Everyone has the ability to connect with this healing energy to help themselves and others. Reiki is not taught - this flow of energy is transmitted or activated by the meditation and touch of a Reiki Master to a student. Through a gentle “laying-on” of hands on a series of body points, Reiki activates your body’s natural healing process and restores emotional wellbeing.

The Roots of Reiki
Let’s first break down the Japanese word (pronounced ray-key): Rei refers to the spiritual dimension, soul, and Higher Intelligence, and Ki means vital life force energy. Together, Reiki means “universal life energy”.

The origins of Reiki go way, way back to the Tibetan Sutras. It wasn’t until the mid-to-late 1800s that Reiki was rediscovered, thanks to the extensive search of Japanese monk educator Dr. Mikao Usui. After meditating on Mount Kurama for 21 days, Dr. Usui received a healing for himself and the opportunity to share with the world what he learned.

Even if you’re not familiar with the concept of Ki, also known as Chi or Prana, you intuitively know what it feels like when your Ki is strong--these are the times you feel ready to take on the world, and this positive state of mind encourages physical health. On the other hand, you’ve likely suffered imbalances from blocked or weak Ki. Reiki’s effect is always beneficial, and energy naturally knows where to go to restore free-flowing Ki.

What Reiki Feels Like
Reiki is offered through a light touch, with the practitioner’s hands placed on or above a series of locations on the head and body. Part of what makes Reiki so deeply relaxing is you’re required to do absolutely nothing but lie down and receive!

The practitioner channels the energy through their hands, and this positive energy begins to flow through your energy field. As you welcome this energy, you may feel a surprising warmth from the practitioner’s palms or awareness of energy gently washing over you.

Negative energy is released, a sensation which many people describe as feeling noticeably “lighter.” At Hudson Healing Arts, we incorporate a few unique techniques to make the energy system as resilient as possible, including a chakra balancing and energy weaving. These elements support the flow of energy in the body and integrate the session into your system.

How Will I Feel After a Session?
Each individual will experience Reiki differently, though it’s most common to feel immediate stress release and a sense of peace. Many report a refreshing mental clarity and wonderful feeling of radiance. It’s not unusual to sleep better than usual after a session.

Long-term benefits may be more subtle and cumulative. Reiki assists the body in releasing toxins, helping to maintain and improve health and manifest an outward harmony, confidence, and happiness.

When we are relaxed and stress-free, our natural ability to heal is triggered, making Reiki a wonderful complementary therapy that enhances other care or treatments you may receive.

As for frequency, once a month is a good general maintenance to rebalance your energy. If however, you’re going through a particularly stressful time, we suggest you schedule your Reiki treatments more frequently.

In today’s rushed world, there’s a tendency to “slot” wellness into our busy schedule. However, it would be of the greatest benefit to just give yourself time to truly process a treatment. Instead of racing somewhere afterwards, we encourage you to give yourself time and space to break with the old, take a walk, and just “be,” if possible.
